Cabell crafts an endlessly enjoyable read in The Cords of Vanity. The protagonist, Robert Etheridge Townsend, is an irredeemable young rascal who can but make good on Cabell's terminal observation that "we like people on account of their good qualities and love them on account of their defects." While the book certainly can be read as a critique of the turn-of-the-century Virginia gentry, it is at least in equal measures a wry and gamboling coming-of-age tale and vehicle for Cabell's seemingly inexhaustible wit. A gem from an author whose current obscurity is lamentable.Product details

The Cords of Vanity A Comedy of Shirking James Branch Cabell 9781374886698 Books Reviews
This edition is best described as typographically hideous--apparently from a computer printout. No variation in type size, no boldface, italics indicated by a preceding and succeeding underline, straight quotation marks and apostrophes. It's as if someone emailed the text and the publisher printed it unchanged. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only affordable edition. If properly presented, it would be much easier to read.
Robert Etheridge Townsend, a young writer, recounts his twelve amatory encounters on his path to a conventional life style. Within his tales, he left an account of the behaviors of members of a relict leisure class in which ancestry, snobbery and pride of place were kept alive by infusions of wealth acquired through marriages of convenience.
