MONTAIGNE / essays Complete with Table of Contents edition by Michel de Montaigne Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
It is considered one of the greatest works of philosophy but, unfortunately, is not my cup of tea...
Very badly mangled text in this edition
seems like reading this for the first time every time I pick it up
The essays of Michel de Montaigne, who lived from 1533 to 1592, is a universal classic that created a new literary genre and is one of the founding works of modern philosophy. Despite the depth and erudition of the author's writing, Montaigne's essays remain a work accessible and enjoyable, gaining my attention because addresses topics of current and general interest, such as education of children, love, marriage, war, fear, cruelty, loneliness, addiction, religion and preparation for death. This book is not recommended for fast readers, but a reflexive reader will really enjoy this book. Reading Montaigne's essays made me rethink many things in my life. Not all essays are for everybody, and you may feel free to jump one or another. Sometimes, the ideas are not easy to grasp, but the effort is worth. Montaigne has become a good friend of mine and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand himself and humanity.
Monsieur Montaigne is a giant of European thought and culture - he needs no endorsement from me. The text as set out could be improved by parallel translations of the Latin and Greek, a minor alteration which would have made the text more accessible.
Montaigne remains without peer in the genre of the personal essay; after all, he invented it. But, like so many other inventors, it takes time and effort to pick out the best of the gems. Philip Lopate has done this for us in "The Art of the Personal Essay" and you can save a lot of trouble by getting your Montaigne there instead of here. But if you are as enthralled with Montaigne as I am, you won't be satisfied that you understand him unless you, as I did, read it all right here. My advice is read Lopate first. You'll get the best of Montaigne and the best of the rest more quickly. But beware as you might fall in love with Montaigne and even take up writing personal essays yourself. That happened to me.
That's all I can say. The text is nearly incomprehensible. Sentences running on and on.... I once had a hard copy of Montaigne's essays and thought this would be of the same caliber. I was, of course, wrong.
