Winner of the 2012 James D. Houston Award, Keenan Norris’s first novel is a beautiful, gritty, coming-of-age tale about two young African Americans in the San Bernardino Valley--a story of exceptional power, lyricism, and depth. Erycha and Touissant live only a few miles apart in the city of Highland, but their worlds are starkly separated by the lines of class, violence, and history. In alternating chapters that touch and intertwine only briefly, Brother and the Dancer follows their adolescence and young adulthood on two sides of the city, the luminous San Bernardino range casting its hot shade over their separate tales in an unflinching vision of black life in Southern California.

This book was assigned reading for one of my English courses. While it is a little slow paced and tends to drag on, I like the themes behind the story. I like that we are learning to appreciate something from the story itself. The message is lovely.Product details

Brother and the Dancer edition by Keenan Norris Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love reading about Touissant & Erycha!
Both their lives are interesting, as well as their characters.
I also get a good sense of the New Orleans and Inland Empire.
Very impressed!
I am being forced to read this garbage by my English professor. I dread opening it. I'm not anywhere near done with it and if given the choice I would never open it again. How this book won any sort of prize is beyond me. The writing is horrendous, the story line even more so. I live in San Bernardino where the book takes places and it is so unrealistic. These two characters are meant to be a contrast to each other and yet, somehow, magically meet every other chapter. To be clear they don't know each other until they go to college and the book takes pace from the time they are 6 years old to older. It constantly changes time. They are 6 then they are 18, then they are 13 then 16. It doesn't flow in the least bit. Why this is a required reading for this class is beyond me.
I enjoyed the 2 main characters in this book, it felt so easy to get into their heads even though they strike me as unique and unordinary. From Erycha's ballet dancing and thug boyfriend to Touissant's brains and athleticism, the characters grow on you in a slow real kind of way.
Some of the scenes really stuck with me. This book was a pleasant reminder that a really good book recurs in various moments of life, enabling reflection from different perspectives in the real world. Well done Mr. Norris. I'll be looking forward to your next book.
